Broken switch, not weather, the cause of GO train delays: Metrolinx

A broken piece of a track switch was to blame for several GO Transit delays during morning rush hour, Metrolinx says.

Several GO train trips were delayed or cancelled Monday morning due to a "defective track switch," the transit organization wrote on its website.

GO's Stouffville, Lakeshore East and West lines are affected by the problem.

A spokesperson for the company initially said the switch problem was caused by the cold temperatures. The temperature fell to -6 C in Toronto on Monday morning, with a wind chill of -10.

Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins later said that, upon investigation, crews determined there was a broken piece inside the switch. Aikins did not say what caused the break, adding that the broken part of the switch will be taken apart and examined.

The switch has been repaired, and regular service has resumed, Aikins said.
