Blanket of snow predicted for much of southern Ontario

Tuesday morning's commute could be disrupted by a weather system that is expected to move into the GTA overnight and dump as much as 10 centimetres of snow.

In a special weather statement, Environment Canada said snow will begin to fall in the Golden Horseshoe late Monday night.

Most places in southern Ontario could receive five to 10 cm, and blowing snow is expected to reduce visibility in open areas.

Up to 15 cm is possible near western Lake Erie before the snow tapers off Tuesday morning.

Public works crews are on standby as the storm approaches.

Toronto Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly said 200 salt trucks are ready to be deployed, in addition to snowplows.

Temperature set to rise

Meanwhile, an extreme cold weather alert that was issued by the City of Toronto on Sunday was cancelled Monday.

The alert was issued to add shelter spaces for the homeless because the temperature dipped to -17 C early Monday morning. The temperature is expected to rise to -4 C on Monday afternoon, as people enjoy outdoor activities on Family Day.

After weeks of freezing temperatures the GTA will finally get a break from the cold later this week.

Environment Canada is predicting a high of zero Tuesday afternoon and a high of 5 C on Wednesday.

The mild temperatures may be accompanied by rain Thursday and Friday.
