WINNIPEG -- Winnipeg will host the 2017 Canada Summer Games, the 50th anniversary of the summer amateur sporting and cultural event, the province of Manitoba and the Canada Games Council announced Friday.

"In addition to contributing an estimated $130 million to our local economy, the 2017 Games will also give Winnipeg athletes the opportunity to compete in front of a hometown audience," said Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz.

"The athletic talent that our community produces is impressive and I personally look forward to being able to cheer on Winnipeg athletes as they compete in this national event."

The City of Winnipeg has identified 19 potential venues and a host committee is expected to be in place by August 2013.

The summer games started in 1967 and are held every four years, with this year's edition set for Sherbrooke, Que., Aug. 2-17. The Canada Winter Games take place in between, similar to the Summer and Winter Olympics.
