The Canadian Armed Forces’ social media teams have been told to limit their use of the hashtag #CAF during the Rio Games, after Twitter began automatically turning the three letters into an emoji of the Central African Republic flag.
Tweets have been sent from official accounts, including @CanadianArmy and @ForcesJobs.
The Department of National Defence told CTV News it has “engaged Twitter to see if a short-term solution is possible.”
Twitter says it launched the flag emojis ahead of the Olympics, as a way for “fans across the globe can share their passion for their favourite teams.”
There are 207 emoji three-letter codes, including one for the Refugee Olympic Team (#ROT).
We got on own Emoji today :) #RefugeeOlympicTeam @olympics #RoadToRio
