ROME -- Canadian show jumper Eric Lamaze kicked off the latest Grand Prix stop Thursday with his second victory in less than a week.

Lamaze, from Schomberg, Ont., finished first in the 24,000 euro (C$35,700) Premio 3 competition aboard Zigali PS for owners Carlene and Andy Ziegler of Artisan Farms. The victory came four days after a win at the Grand Prix of La Baule aboard Powerplay.

The top-ranked Canadian had a time of 37.67 seconds in the jumpoff.

"Fences one and two were new fences for the jumpoff, I was fast to number one and just kept going," Lamaze said. "It set me up for the round and I was able to leave strides out in several lines. It was a good opening day in Rome."

Simon Delestre was second in 38.00 seconds aboard Ryan des Hayettes and fellow French rider Kevin Staut took third in 38.62 with Oh d'Eole. A total of 64 horses were in the field and 26 qualified for the jumpoff.

Competition continues through Sunday.
