GLENDALE, Colo. -- Canada has finished third in the HSBC World Rugby Women's Sevens Series season opener after blanking France 28-0 on Sunday.

The Canadian squad received two tries from Bianca Farella, as well as one apiece for Charity Williams and Kaili Lukan.

Captain Ghislaine Landry, who became the first-ever women's player to hit 1,000 career points with a try against France on Saturday, added two conversions, as did Breanne Nicholas.

Earlier Sunday, Canada held off Russia 21-17 in the Cup quarterfinals, but fell to New Zealand 28-19 in the semis.

The Kiwis trounced the host U.S. in the final 33-7.

The event was the first of six on the circuit, which this season comes with the promise of Olympic qualification for the top four finishers.

Next up is the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens in the United Arab Emirates from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1.

Australia won the 2017-18 title with Canada finishing a disappointing fourth after an injury-plagued campaign. The Canadian women were third in four of the five previous seasons, with a second-place finish in 2014-15.

The top four in the final World Series standings will join host Japan at the 2020 Olympics. Six more countries will join them via regional qualifying tournaments in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America from June to December 2019.
