TORONTO -- R.A. Dickey picked up his 10th win of the season and slugger Edwin Encarnacion drove in a pair of runs as the Toronto Blue Jays kicked off a six-game homestand with a 5-2 win over the New York Yankees on Monday night.

Dickey (10-12) allowed one earned run and six hits over 6 1/3 innings to help Toronto (59-73) post its first victory over New York in 11 games. Jose Reyes scored twice and Casey Janssen worked the ninth inning for his 24th save.

The Blue Jays broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth inning, more than enough support for Dickey and three Toronto relievers.

Alex Rodriguez hit his 650th career homer for the Yankees (69-62), who entered play 3 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot. Phil Hughes (4-13) shouldered the loss.

The Yankees opened the scoring in the first inning.

Leadoff man Brett Gardner worked a full count off Dickey before singling up the middle. Gardner moved to second on a Josh Thole passed ball and advanced to third on a Derek Jeter groundout.

Robinson Cano followed with a tough chopper that deflected off Dickey's glove to Reyes at shortstop. The only play was to first base, allowing Gardner to score.

Toronto tied it in the second inning when Kevin Pillar hit a flare to centre field that scored Brett Lawrie of Langley, B.C. The Blue Jays took the lead an inning later when Encarnacion drove in Reyes with a single to left field.

Rodriguez hit a solo homer over the right-field wall to pull New York even in the top of the fifth inning. It was his third home run of the season.

The Yankees loaded the bases with two outs but Dickey got out of the jam when Cano flew out to centre field.

Toronto put runners on the corners in the bottom half of the frame after a Reyes double and a single by Ryan Goins. Encarnacion hit a drive to right field that a backpedalling Ichiro Suzuki couldn't haul in by the warning track.

Reyes scored on the error and Adam Lind followed by lashing another ball into right to push Goins across. After an intentional walk to Lawrie, Moises Sierra hit a sacrifice fly that scored Encarnacion.

That was it for Hughes (4-13), who allowed three earned runs and seven hits. He was replaced by southpaw David Huff, who struck out Thole for the third out.

Aaron Loup replaced Dickey in the seventh inning and struck out former Blue Jay Vernon Wells and Jeter. Sergio Santos came in for Loup with two outs in the eighth inning and struck out Rodriguez.

Both teams had seven hits. Announced attendance was 35,241 and the game took two hours 33 minutes to play.
