Home security is a big deal, and your front door is the first barrier to entry. Having the right lock can make a big difference. Not only do you want it to be secure and reliable, but you also want it to be convenient for you to lock and unlock multiple times a day. Standard key locks are easy to pick, and who wants to carry a bunch of keys around these days, right?
Smart locks have been getting more and more popular over time. They open with fingerprints, codes, or even a connection to your smartphone. They’re secure, convenient, easy to install, and best of all, they can lock automatically so you never have to think about locking your doors again.
Not all smart locks are created equal, and it’s safe to assume that you want the best possible fit for your home. Since smart locks will vary in price, unlock mechanisms, battery life, size, and more, we encourage you to think over each option carefully to make sure you make the right choice.
This comprehensive guide will investigate the best smart locks in Canada right now and outline the criteria you should consider while making your purchase decision. Let’s dive right into our top five products.
Top Pick: Eufy Security C220 Smart Lock
Upgrade Pick: Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt
Budget Pick: Hornbill Fingerprint/Keypad Smart Lock
Well-Rounded Choice: Ultraloq Smart Lock U-Bolt Pro
The Eufy Security C220 Smart Lock has a great unlock system in place. You have six options: you can use the keypad, an Apple watch, the smartphone app, your fingerprint, voice assistants, or a mechanical key to unlock it. Since the lock has its own Wi-Fi connectivity, you won’t need to purchase and set up a bridge for it to work properly.
As long as your door is somewhat shielded from the elements, the lock won’t malfunction in poor weather. Reliability is important, right? This model has been rigorously tested (including being successfully locked and unlocked over 100,000 times), so you won’t need to think about replacing it any time soon. Since it has a tamper alarm, you can feel safe while you’re at home and while you’re away. If anyone tries to mess with the lock, they’ll be scared off.
Unfortunately, we have to talk about the low points too. This option is not a good choice for people who want automated locking and unlocking—there’s no Bluetooth connectivity, so it can’t perform those actions for you. Also, it isn’t very efficient with its batteries, so you’ll need to replace them every 2-3 months depending on how often you use the door and what your climate is like.
Reviewers have a high opinion of the Eufy Security C220 Smart Lock. It’s really easy to install with the provided instructions and they’re happy that this one doesn’t need a bridge. The battery life is their main complaint, and some people wish it had an auto-lock and auto-unlock option.

Price: 5/5
Quality: 4.5/5
All in all, we have a lot of confidence in the Eufy Security C220 Smart Lock. Its battery life could be better, but it’s a highly reliable option with a bunch of great features. As far as smart locks go, you can’t do much better than this one.
We love the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt for home security purposes. That’s the main reason we chose it for our upgrade pick. It won’t give you any trouble in extreme heat or cold, and it’s fully waterproof. Our favourite thing is the tamper alarm—if someone tries to pick the lock or tamper with the lock casing, an alarm will sound.
We like that you have options for opening the lock, too. You can do it remotely or in front of the door with the Schlage app, you can use a mechanical key, you can ask your voice assistants, and you can use a keypad code. You’re able to save 100 unique codes, so everyone can have their own and you can track who is coming and going—kids, dog walkers, etc.
Even our upgrade pick will come with a handful of faults. The battery life is the main issue with this one—fresh batteries usually only last for a few months, and the life may be even shorter if it’s cold outside. Aside from the expensive price tag, the only other low point is the lack of automatic functionality. You’ll need to lock and unlock it every time.
Reviewers are mostly happy with the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt. People have issues with the battery life pretty often, but they appreciate how easy it is to install and set up with extra passcodes. The intruder alert feature gives them a lot of peace of mind as far as home security goes too.

Cons:
No auto-lock or unlock
Battery life is poor
Expensive
Performance: 4.5/5
Usability: 4.5/5
Price: 3/5
Quality: 4.5/5
All in all, the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt is one of our favourite options for home security. It doesn’t have any automatic functionality and the battery life could be better, but there’s no better choice if you’re looking for burglar-proof security and a reliable lock.
Despite the lower price tag of the Hornbill Fingerprint/Keypad Smart Lock, it’s got a lot of things working in its favour. There are tons (and we mean tons!) of ways to open this lock. You can open it with your smartphone using Bluetooth, voice assistants using Wi-Fi, your fingerprint, a keypad code, a fob, or a mechanical key.
We love the flexibility of the keypad codes—you can set more than 300 codes, and its peep-proof system lets you add random numbers around the correct code to prevent people from identifying the right sequence. If the code or fingerprint scan fails five times, an intruder alarm will be triggered—this is a great security feature.
An alert will also sound once the battery gets low, so you know to change it before it runs out of juice and locks you out. Speaking of locking you out, the smart lock will automatically lock anywhere from 5 to 900 seconds after it’s unlocked—you can set the interval yourself.
We’ve got one thing to bring to your attention that you might not love. Some people have complained about the reliability of this smart lock during winter temperatures. We haven’t seen any trouble during our tests, but some reviewers were not able to use the fingerprint options once the temperatures were very low.
Reviewers really love the Hornbill Fingerprint/Keypad Smart Lock. They enjoy how many options there are for opening the lock, and it’s really easy to install even if they have no experience with something like it.

Can set more than 300 keypad codes
Auto lock can be customized between 5 and 900 seconds
Alarm will sound when battery is low and when 5 incorrect password attempts have been tried
Cons:
Some fingerprint issues during winter
Performance: 5/5
Usability: 5/5
Price: 5/5
Quality: 4/5
Overall, the Hornbill Fingerprint/Keypad Smart Lock is a great option for budget-conscious shoppers and people who want to test out the experience before committing to a higher-end option. We don’t blame you for either approach. It’s smart. And this is a great smart lock to do it with.
The Wyze WiFi & Bluetooth Enabled Smart Door Lock is our top recommendation if you want to keep your existing key lock but also have smart functionality with a Bluetooth auto-unlock. Once the door is closed, it will automatically lock for you. That’s right! It has door sensors. You’ll get an alert if the door is left open for too long. Safety is key, after all.
The companion app will let you lock and unlock the door from anywhere, and you can send a virtual key to friends, family members, dog walkers, nannies, and whoever else needs access to your home. You can even use Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant to lock and unlock the deadbolt as long as you’re connected to Wi-Fi. How fun is that?
The main thing we don’t love about this option is how limited the entry options are—it only works on an auto-unlock system from your smartphone’s proximity. It’s only compatible with single-cylinder deadbolts, too, so you’ll need to make sure your current lock system will work with it before you buy.
Reviewers are enjoying the convenience of the Wyze WiFi & Bluetooth Enabled Smart Door Lock. It’s really easy to set up and they like that they didn’t have to change the external hardware on the door. They can still use their key if they want to, but they also have a way to let people in if they don’t have a key. The app is really easy to figure out, too.

Compatible with voice assistants
Cons:
Very limited entry options
Only compatible with single-cylinder deadbolts
Performance: 5/5
Usability: 4/5
Price: 4/5
Quality: 4.5/5
All in all, the Wyze WiFi & Bluetooth Enabled Smart Door Lock is one of our favourite smart locks for internal deadbolt control. It lets you keep your existing key while adding an extra option for unlocking the door.
The Ultraloq Smart Lock U-Bolt Pro has a long list of amazing features you’ll love. You can unlock it in six different ways, so every member of the family will be able to use the way they like best. It can store 100 different fingerprints and 50 codes between four and eight numbers long. Every person that needs access to your house can have a unique code!
We love that you can customize your auto-lock time, too, anywhere between 1 and 300 seconds. You’ll never experience the momentary panic of wondering “Did I lock the door?” again. With the companion app, you can lock and unlock the door from anywhere, monitor the entry log, check your notifications, and even share e-keys with other people.
There are a handful of things that we aren’t quite happy with. The proximity auto-unlock and magic shake unlock can both be a bit finicky, meaning they won’t work every time. Also, you’ll need to make sure you have a Wi-Fi bridge close to the door if you want to use voice assistants or share e-keys.
Reviewers are pleased with the Ultraloq Smart Lock U-Bolt Pro performance for the most part. A couple of the unlock mechanisms are a bit unreliable (magic shake and auto unlock), but everything else about it is perfect. The custom auto-lock is convenient, and people love that they can lock/unlock the door remotely as long as they are connected to Wi-Fi. They love the appearance of it too.

Can set the auto-lock timer anywhere between 1 and 300 seconds
Companion app lets you manage users, share e-keys, check the log, and receive entry notifications
Cons:
Needs a Wi-Fi bridge for voice assistants and sharing e-keys
Auto unlock and shake-to-unlock are not super reliable
Performance: 4/5
Usability: 4.5/5
Price: 4/5
Quality: 5/5
Overall, the Ultraloq Smart Lock U-Bolt Pro is a high-quality option. It does cost a bit more than the average smart lock, but with the extra ways to unlock it and its ease of use, we bet you’ll fall in love with it just as quickly as we did.
Smart locks will range in price roughly from $150 to over $300. In general, price will not accurately represent the value and quality. Some of the most expensive locks will be missing key features like automated locking/unlocking, fingerprint scanners, and more. Most people will be able to find their perfect lock for less than $250.
Smart locks can come with all sorts of unlock types. They should all have a mechanical key included so you have a backup if the power fails. The potential unlock systems include a smartphone app via Wi-Fi, auto-unlocks via Bluetooth, keypad codes, fingerprint scanners, fobs, and voice assistants. Every keypad will have some combination of those unlock types, and it’s a good idea to be aware of which ones you like before you buy.
All smart locks will run on batteries, so battery life is an important thing to consider. If you don’t mind changing the batteries frequently, you can choose any smart lock that appeals to you. Some will be really inefficient and will need new batteries every 1-3 months. Other smart locks can run for 6-12 months on a single set of batteries, and those are the best options for people who don’t want to think about maintenance very often.
