As a self-proclaimed “Queen of Lip Products,” I have tried my fair share of lippies, from balms and butters to oils and glosses, and yes, traditional lipsticks. But something I haven’t really dipped my toes into has been stains. The thought of committing to a single colour all day can be daunting. You have to be pretty sure it’ll work with the rest of your makeup look before you paint it on because once it’s on…it’s on for the day.
I’ve been wanting to try a lip stain for a while, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a product I wasn’t sure would work for me. Through my frequent social media scrolling I came across the Sacheau Stay-N-Peel Lip Liner, and with a price tag under $20, I knew I had to give it a go. Having watched countless people apply, and peel off this lip liner online, I felt pretty confident applying it for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised with the results. It’s since become a staple in my makeup routine, whether I’m getting ready for an all-day event like a wedding or a night out with friends.
OK, here’s why I love the Sacheau Stay-N-Peel Lip Liner so much. While traditional cream lipsticks have a permanent space in my heart, I’m not always into the all-night commitment of dashing to the bathroom to make sure it hasn’t migrated on my face. This has solved that problem.
Although it’s meant to be used as a lip liner paired with your favourite lipstick, it also looks great all on its own or topped with a clear gloss. I personally like applying a slightly thicker line and feathering it into the middle of my lips for a natural gradient so I don’t have to fuss with anything else on top of it. However, since it’s a stain, topping it with lip oil doesn’t separate or break the pigment down.
The Sacheau Stay-N-Peel Lip Liner comes in seven shades ranging from neutral hues like taupe, brown, and coral to bolder choices like mauve, purple, and a grey-brown colour that I’ve seen people use as fake freckles in a pinch. The colours are versatile and pair gorgeously with most lip products in similar colour families; that means you won’t have to worry about matching it perfectly to your signature lippie for a seamless look.
Application has a bit of a learning curve, and even an experienced makeup lover like me had to work through some trial and error. I’ve found that overlining doesn’t give me my desired results and that following my natural lip line works best. I also had to figure out the right amount of product to use to avoid patchy results and how long to leave it on for. On days when I only want a pinch of colour, I only let it develop for around five minutes or gently wipe some of the stain away with micellar water. It results in a subtle blushed look that isn’t super bold, but looks great under a gloss.
Since the application takes some experimenting, reviews are varied. Some people have had issues with it clinging to dry patches and others have found it difficult to avoid transferring the product onto their teeth while it develops. I’ve found that these problems can be avoided by using moisturizing lip products on the regular and keeping the product away from the centre of the lips. You can also use tweezers to remove the product if you’re worried about staining your fingertips. The reviewers who love this peel-off lip liner as much as I do agree that it’s long-lasting, buildable, and comfortable, and love that they don’t have to worry about reapplying it throughout the day.
