Free messaging platform WhatsApp has bolstered its security measures, revealing that it is in the midst of making a two-step verification process available to all of its billion-plus users.

The additional layer of security, originally trialled in the beta version of the app last year, is an optional feature which allows the user to create a six-digit passcode, which will then be required every time that same phone number is registered with WhatsApp -- for instance, when activating the account on a new smartphone.

Users can also nominate a back-up email address which, in an emergency, can be sent a link to disable the feature.

Although users won't be required to use the passcode every time they open the app, WhatsApp will request the code is entered "periodically" to ensure the account is secure and that the user remembers the code.
