(Relaxnews) - Standing desks are fast becoming an up-and-coming trend across homes and offices, as proved when one designer launched a crowdfunding project for a version of the concept this week and met his $50,000 target in just 38 minutes.

StandDesk' is an automatically adjustable work surface which, unlike most similar desks, features hands-free technology. Users simply press the control button for two seconds and the desk will raise or lower automatically.

The design is the brainchild of Steven Yu, who wanted to create an affordable standing desk to ease his back pain following a motorcycle accident. It was launched on crowdfunding website Kickstarter this week and proved to be an instant hit among backers.

"I did some research and I found these sit-to-stand desks and I really wanted to buy one," Yu explains. "But the problem was, I couldn't find anything that was affordable, and more importantly, automatic."

Capable of lifting up to 225 lbs, the desk's steel frame and bamboo top are fully recyclable.

Standing desks have been lauded for their health benefits, but current versions are priced at the high end of the market. The Stir Kinetic Desk, which recognizes when its user needs to stand or sit down, retails at $3,890.

StandDesk is available in an all-black or black and white color versions and in a gloss or matte finish. The estimated future retail price is $499, with various prices available to Kickstarter backers. Initial delivery is scheduled for September 2014 within the US and for 2015 within Europe.
