A new image released by NASA shows the dazzling last moments of a star like our own sun.
The image, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, shows a burned-out white dwarf star shedding the outer layer of gas which surrounds its core in a “cocoon,” according to NASA experts.
The stellar phenomenon is also known as a planetary nebula.
The beautiful, violet and orange glow comes from ultraviolet light from the dying star. The bowtie-like shape is formed during outbursts of gas, which, in this case, erupted in two different directions.
The image provides a glimpse at what our sun could look like in about 5 billion years, when scientists expect it will finally burn out.
