Famous buildings and monuments around the world will be plunged into darkness on March 29 to honour the global environmental initiative Earth Hour.

In North America, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Empire State Building in New York and the Space Needle in Seattle are just some of the legendary sites which will be dimming their lights for the event. Earth Hour USA has launched a social media campaign to encourage buildings such as Navy Pier in Chicago and the Alamo Shrine in Texas to take part. On the Canadian border, even Niagara Falls will see its power cut out, along with the CN Tower.

In the U.K., swathes of London will go dark, with Wembley Stadium, Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace and the London Eye just some of the many buildings involved in the initiative. Elsewhere in the U.K., Brighton Pier, Edinburgh Castle and the Scottish Parliament will also be switching off.

France has also embraced the concept, with nearly 400 monuments participating. In Paris, the Eiffel Tower will only be turned off for five minutes for security reasons, while other monuments like the Notre Dame cathedral and the Arc de Triomphe will be remain switched off for the full hour.

In Australia, home of the movement, the Sydney Opera House will lead the way by shutting off the lights, whilst there will also be a starlight picnic on Bondi Beach. In Singapore, the Marina Bay Sands will go dark, The city will also welcome the stars of "Spider-Man 2," after the superhero was named official ambassador for Earth Hour 2014.

Other monuments set to switch off include Tokyo Tower, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and Italy's Tower of Pisa. In previous years, landmarks such as Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro and the Colosseum in Rome have also taken part.

Earth Hour is a grassroots movement which was founded in 2007 and has since become a global movement. In 2013 over 7,000 cities and towns in 153 countries took part in the event.
