Cmdr. Chris Hadfield has touched back down in his native land for the first time since returning to Earth after his turn as commander of the International Space Station.

Hadfield tweeted from his popular social media account to announce his arrival in Montreal Saturday, following weeks of post-mission checkups and medical tests in Texas.

During his recent five-months in space, the Ontario native became an Internet sensation with his observations and hundreds of photos of Earth taken from orbit.

His popularity soared to even greater heights in the final days of his mission, when he posted his own version of the 1969 David Bowie classic “Space Oddity” – recorded while aboard the ISS – to the website YouTube, where it quickly went viral.

On Sunday, Hadfield tweeted a photo of Ottawa.

On Monday, Hadfield will be meeting Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen at 24 Sussex Dr. The event is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m.

In the afternoon, Hadfield will hold a news conference at the Canadians Space Agency headquarters.

Hadfield will be the guest of honour at the Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill in July.
