Saskatoon investigator unable to determine cause of fatal fire

WATCH: The Saskatoon Fire Department says one person was killed in a house fire over the weekend.

A Saskatoon fire investigator has been unable to determine what started a lethal house fire on Avenue N over the weekend.

Firefighters were called to the home on the 600 block of Avenue N South just after 9 a.m. on Saturday, with the first arriving crew reporting smoke visible from the roof and inside the home.

After firefighters tackled the blaze, they found someone inside the home. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene, the fire department says.

Following an examination of the scene, a fire investigator says the blaze started at the bottom of the basement stairs, though they could not determine the cause.

Damage from the fire is estimated at $125,000, and the home has been closed due to the amount of fire and water damage.

It’s not known why the occupant was unable to evacuate.
