Man charged with kidnapping, assault after dangerous person alert issued in northern Sask.

The Saskatchewan RCMP has laid several charges in connection to a string of incidents that led to a dangerous person alert being issued in the province’s far north.

On May 15 at around 11 p.m., Loon Lake RCMP received a tip that a woman was potentially taken against her will on Island Lake First Nation.

Officers responded and learned a man had entered a home in the area with a gun. RCMP noted that the gun was not fired and that the suspect fled the home with a woman.

Determining the pair were travelling in a vehicle, RCMP officers searched the area but could not locate them. As a result of the investigation, the decision was made to issue a dangerous person alert to the first nation and its surrounding area.

At around 12:40 p.m. on May 16, officers found the suspect vehicle, which was previously reported stolen, off Highway 699 between Island Lake First Nation and Loon Lake.

The vehicle was empty, and a search of the surrounding area ensued.

The suspect, a 24-year-old man from Canoe Narrow, was found and arrested. He faces seven charges with include kidnapping with a firearm, pointing a firearm, assault and theft of a motor vehicle.

The woman was located shortly after and assessed by EMS for non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers also located and seized an airsoft handgun and an inoperable firearm.

The dangerous person alert was cancelled after the arrest was made. The accused is scheduled to appear in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on May 20.

Island Lake First Nation (Ministikwan) is located approximately 350 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon.
