Evacuations underway as fire threatens homes on James Smith Cree Nation

Evacuation orders are in effect within James Smith Cree Nation – as an uncontained wildfire is threatening several properties in the area.

The fire, designated as 25-PA-JSIR01, is approximately 100 hectares in size, according to the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA).

Crews from multiple fire departments, including Melfort, Kinistino, Garden River and Muskoday First Nation have responded to the area – in addition to water bombers dispatched by the SPSA.

Photos from the area display massive plumes of smoke near several properties on the first nation.

The evacuation orders were issued Saturday afternoon – with affected residents being sent to the Benard Constant Community School (BCCS) which is acting as the designated evacuation zone for residents.
