SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. - A high-speed chase in and around Swift Current, Sask., ended Thursday with the suspect being shot by an RCMP officer.
Streets were blocked off for most of the day as police investigated. RCMP say the chase began in the city shortly after midnight and then moved onto the Trans-Canada Highway.
Speeds of up to 170 kilometres an hour were reached before the suspect vehicle ran over a spike belt.
RCMP opened fire when the driver of the truck took a run at officers.
A 26-year-old man from Herbert, Sask., suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
"Officers felt threatened," said Cpl. Bill Betker. "They felt threatened for their lives, and the lives of people, the general public out there.
"Lethal force is the last resort that the police used."
The Trans-Canada Highway continued to be closed after the incident to allow officers to collect evidence.
