Which Sask. communities were the windiest this week?

As another round of winter weather hit Saskatchewan this week, several communities also had to contend with heavy wind, with some areas facing gusts over 100 km/h.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) weather summary on Friday, these were the windiest communities on Thursday, along with the recorded peak wind gusts:

• Estevan and Coronach – 104 km/h
• Lucky Lake and Mankota – 102 km /h
• Moose Jaw and Rockglen – 100 km/h
• Regina and Val Marie – 96 km/h
• Nipawin, North Battleford, and Watrous - 94 km/ h
• Prince Albert, Last Mountain, Assiniboia, and Swift Current - 93 km/h
• Leader Airport, Eastend Cypress, Pilger, and Bratt’s Lake – 91 km/h
• Meadow Lake, Saskatoon and Kindersley – 89 km/h
• Yellow Grass, Elbow, Yorkton, and Maple Creek – 87 km/h
• Cypress Hills Park and Weyburn – 85 km/h

ECCC said the summary may contain preliminary information and does not constitute a final report.

A post by Terri Lang on the Saskatchewan Severe Weather Tracker Facebook page said Thursday was the first “Mackenzie Screamer” of the season, with warning-level winds, blowing snow, and temperatures falling below freezing after days of melt.

According to Lang, Mackenzie Screamers originate in the Mackenzie Valley of the Northwest Territories and often mark a quick end to a prolonged mild streak, screaming down quickly across the Prairies with strong northwest winds, falling temperatures, and some snow.

Lang said a second Screamer is set to move through Saskatchewan on Saturday night until Sunday but is not forecasted to be as strong as Thursday’s.

As of Saturday afternoon, several more communities were under a wind warning.
