Layoffs issued at Grenfell nursing home The SHA has issued 33 layoff notices for staff at the Grenfell nursing home. Wayne Mantyka reports.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority has issued layoff notices to 33 permanent staff at the Grenfell Pioneer Home.

The SHA decided to relocate residents in the home due to mould in late August.

“This action ensures that our residents continue to receive safe, quality care as we investigate the severity of the mould and allow the Ministry time to decide how they want to proceed,” the SHA said in a written statement to CTV News.

As of Sept. 12, all of the residents had transferred to new homes. The health authority laid off 33 permanent staff on Sept. 13 as a result of the relocation, since the home is no longer accepting admissions or offering programming.

The health authority says the layoff notices do not mean the employees will lose their jobs. Instead, they will have an opportunity to take another job within the SHA.

The SHA says it is working with the union to make sure displacement rights are respected.

The Ministry of Health is still deciding on the future of long-term care in Grenfell. According to the SHA, the facility could undergo maintenance or be replaced.
