Glen Elm Trailer Court residents at the end of their rope, with more evictions scheduled

At least two manufactured homes at Regina’s Glen Elm Trailer Court were demolished on Tuesday – and while some members of the community like Jaysee Stanhope have yet to be affected by the ongoing eviction notices, she says it seems like a matter of time before her and her husband Tom face an upheaval.

“I have nowhere to go if they kick me out of here, I’m done. I can’t afford to rent a home even with my husband working. We have an RV that we bought, just in case,” she said.

The president of the Glen Elm Retirement Community Residents Association Randall Edge told CTV News they still feel that the best solution is for them to take ownership of the property. However four consecutive offers to the current property owner have been rejected. According to Edge, the fifth and current offer in place is north of $15 million, well above the financial evaluation of the property as of two years ago.

“We will continue to be persistent, to look at the offer and we will keep stepping it up until finally we get to a place where the property owner believes that he’s getting a fair value for his home,” Edge said.

Edge added that the association has received feedback from the property owner’s realtor indicating that the issue isn’t price, but that the owner wants an immediate closing date on the property. Edge says that is not possible because they are required by law to perform phase one environmental studies that will take 60 days.

Stanhope says that attempts by residents to contact the property owner and discuss the eviction notices have been ignored.

“We’re angry, we’re frustrated, we’re hurt, we’re puzzled, we’re scared. But we want to know why. Ignoring us doesn’t make us go away. Ignoring us makes us more determined to get in his face.”

Edge also added that the association filed a petition on Tuesday to the City of Regina to take a hard look at the old Taylor Field site as a possible destination for more manufactured homes.

CTV News reached out to the City of Regina for comment but did not receive a response by deadline.

The next eviction date is set for June 30, according to Stanhope.
