Boy identified in suspicious death on southern Sask. reserve

RCMP have identified the six-year-old boy who died on the Kahkewistahaw First Nation.

Lee Allan Bonneau was last seen around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening playing outside the Kahkewistahaw Education and Sports Complex.

Broadview RCMP received a call from the child’s caregiver shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday, saying the boy had been missing for about an hour and a half.

“The caregiver had made some attempts to locate the child without any success and then subsequently reported the child missing to the RCMP,” Sgt. Craig Cleary said at a news conference Thursday afternoon in Regina.

About 20 minutes later, RCMP received a report of an injured child on the Kahkewistahaw First Nation. Bonneau was taken to hospital, where he later died.

The boy’s mother says he was fun-loving, had the deepest laugh and loved being outdoors, according to an RCMP release. Bonneau was about to enter grade two this fall.

RCMP haven’t released any details about the extent of Bonneau’s injuries, other than that they are consistent with what they would consider a suspicious death.

The RCMP had previously reported that the boy had been under the care of Yorkton Tribal Council Child and Family Services, but have since sent out a correction.

The Ministry of Social Services says they are unable to comment on the case as the investigation is ongoing.
