Former CTV broadcaster Seamus O’Regan will seek the Liberal nomination in the Newfoundland riding of St. John’s South-Mount Pearl, sources have told CTV News.

O’Regan, a St. John’s native, did not make an official announcement, but he has been retweeting messages of support from his followers.

O’Regan co-hosted Canada AM, CTV’s popular morning show, for nearly 10 years before becoming a correspondent for CTV National News. He left CTV in 2012.

O’Regan was previously rumoured to be considering a run for the Liberals in Toronto. But it makes more sense for him to run in his home province, political analyst Scott Reid said Tuesday.

“If the news is true, he’ll be running in his backyard,” Reid told Canada AM.

“One of the key, critical things to get right when a party appoints or welcomes a so-called star candidate is they can’t just be parachuted in, they can’t be dropped on the locals,” he said.

“Seamus has deep roots, he’s from Newfoundland and I think therefore he’ll be a great match.”
