Nigel Wright, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s former chief of staff who was caught up in the Senate expenses scandal, is returning to his previous employer: private equity firm Onex.

Wright will join the London office as a managing director, according to a statement the company issued on Monday.

"We missed Nigel during his leave of absence and are excited to have him back," Gerry Schwartz, Onex’s chairman and CEO, said in the statement. "Nigel is an experienced investor and a great asset to our team."

Wright took a leave of absence from the company in 2010 to join the Prime Minister’s Office as chief of staff. He resigned his post in May 2013 when word of his $90,000 cheque to help now-suspended senator Mike Duffy repay ineligible expenses became public.

After a lengthy investigation, the RCMP announced that it would not charge Wright in connection with the cheque.

Earlier this month, however, the Mounties slapped Duffy with 31 charges, including bribery of a judicial officer, frauds on the government and breach of trust in relation to the cheque.

In June, it was reported that Wright would be returning to Onex and high-ranking Conservatives bid him farewell from Ottawa with a handful of dinners and parties.

"I am very pleased to be back at Onex and am looking forward to helping build our business," Wright said in the statement.
