A valentine from the Alberta NDP is getting mixed reactions online. The heart-adorned love message shared on social media features a smiling Premier Rachel Notley and the words “Building a pipeline… to your heart.”

Notley has long advocated for the construction of new pipelines that would bring oilsands products to ocean ports, allowing Alberta producers facing an economic downturn to get paid more.

Her pipeline advocacy has been coupled with a plan to fight climate change by phasing out coal, capping carbon emissions at 100 megatonnes and a broad-based carbon tax, but she has continued to face criticism from some environmentalists.

The electronic card was posted on the Alberta NDP web page and Twitter account with the words “Happy Valentine's Day from all of us at the Alberta NDP.”

Some social media users did not find it funny, while others seemed entertained.

Twitter user Katie Jensen responded with her own valentine, which showed a duck apparently coated in oil. It was reminiscent of images from 2008, when more than 1,600 birds died after landing on an oilsands tailings pond. The company involved was fined $3 million.

The Council of Canadians was also unimpressed, calling it a “poisoned valentine” and linking to a story about the costs of water contamination.

Another Twitter user, Seb FoxAllen, posted a valentine of his own that said “Quit runnin’ trains through my heart.”

One Twitter user said she won’t vote for Notely again.

Some Albertans, however, appreciated the joke.
