Wolfe Islander IV returns to Kingston, but has yet to resume service

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) says the Wolfe Islander IV ferry that moves between Kingston and Wolfe Island has returned from Hamilton after undergoing repairs.

The electric ferry was damaged last December, just months after first coming into service, prompting the return of the older, smaller Wolfe Islander III ferry.

The Wolfe Islander IV has yet to return to service. The MTO says it will undergo some tests first.

“Prior to returning to service, the vessel will undergo fire and safety inspections and drills -- as well as testing -- to confirm that systems are functioning well and meet all regulatory requirements,” a news release said. “Once the testing and inspections are completed, which are conducted on-site with crew, the Wolfe Islander IV will return to service.”

The ministry says, in the meantime, the Wolfe Islander III will continue to provide ferry service between Kingston and Dawson Point.

The Wolfe Island Ferry is a critical link between the island and the city of Kingston.
