Oscar Peterson statue repaired after vandalism

CTV Ottawa: Oscar Peterson statue defaced CTV's Katie Griffin with details of the criminal investigation

The statue of Canadian jazz great Oscar Peterson has been repaired after being vandalized early Tuesday morning.

Golden tears were spray-painted on the statue which sits at the corner of the National Arts Centre at Elgin Street and Albert Street.

Ottawa Police are now investigating the vandalism which also includes graffiti on two garage doors at the NAC.

The NAC has provided Ottawa Police with video surveillance footage.

The NAC's director of communications, Rosemary Thompson, says the Oscar Peterson statue is one of the most popular attractions in the capital.

"He's one of the world's greatest pianists. He did Montreal proud and he did the whole country proud, " said Thompson.

Thompson doesn't know of a motive for the vandalism.

There are reports it's linked to the events in Ferguson, Missouri.

The statue of Oscar and his piano was covered with a tarp once the vandalism was discovered.

Repairs began late Tuesday afternoon.
