No injuries after wind blows off metal debris from ByWard Market building

Ottawa police say there were no injuries after debris fell off a ByWard Market building during a thunderstorm Saturday.

Police tell CTV News in an email that officers responded to a call for service at 6:13 p.m. reporting a metal sheet being blown off a building in the 100 block of George Street.

A witness at the scene told CTV News the object fell from a high-rise structure under construction.

The road was briefly closed while firefighters cleared the area and secured the debris, police say.

A brief but powerful thunderstorm moved through the nation’s capital in the late afternoon.

Environment Canada had warned of wind gusts of up to 90 km/h and heavy rain.

A severe thunderstorm warning at around 5:45 p.m. has since been lifted.

George Street has since reopened.
