Major overnight fire at Hawkesbury, On. apartment building considered suspicious; all residents safe

A major overnight fire at a residential apartment building in Hawkesbury that affected 30 units but caused no injuries, is considered suspicious and is being investigated as arson by the Ontario Provincial Police.

The United Counties of Prescott and Russell say the fire occurred late Saturday and early Sunday at 810 Portelance Avenue.

The county said some residents were affected by smoke, but all are safe. OPP says three individuals were treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

“We offer our full support to those affected by this fire. Our teams, in collaboration with the Red Cross, have done exceptional work on site to support and relocate the tenants,” said Yves Laviolette, warden of the county’s Council.

“We also wish to acknowledge the outstanding work of the firefighters and emergency services.”

Hawkesbury is approximately 110 kilometres northeast of downtown Ottawa.
