Two police officers injured after assault in Smiths Falls

A Gatineau, Que. driver accused of assaulting two police officers in Smiths Falls Saturday evening is facing charges.

Ontario Provincial Police say a person reported suspicious activity at approximately 8 p.m. about three occupants of a parked vehicle.

The vehicle was reported to have taken off on Highway 15 at a “high rate of speed,” police said in a news release Sunday afternoon.

An investigation began between the community of Elgin and Smiths Falls, about 40 kilometres apart on Highway 15.

OPP and Smiths Falls police officers found the vehicle at a gas station and arrested the driver following an investigation.

During the arrest, two officers sustained minor injuries, police say.

A 19-year-old was charged with two impaired driving charges, two counts of assault with intent to resist arrest and two counts of resist of a peace officer.

The suspect was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice next month.
