Downtown explosion and fire sends one person to hospital

A fire in downtown Ottawa Saturday night sent one person to hospital and caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

Fire crews were called to 195 Rosemere Ave. around 8:15 pm after reports of an explosion. Residents say a barbeque exploded on the back balcony of a house and the flames spread quickly.

Firefighters called a second alarm before knocking down the fire quickly. The blaze was under control by 8:45.

According to paramedics, a 65-year-old woman was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. She's in stable condition. A 50-year-old man was also treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and released. A firefighter suffered a minor cut and was treated on scene.

Six people will be displaced by the fire. Ottawa Fire says there was $400,000 in structural damage and $100,000 to contents the the house.
