HALIFAX - The lawyer for a Nova Scotia man who received one of the province's heftiest sentences for drunk driving offences says his punishment is too harsh and should be reduced.

Luke Craggs wants the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal to reduce the prison term of six years and nine months imposed on Terry Naugle last February.

He says the sentences for three related offences should not be consecutive, but concurrent, because they originated from a single incident.

Naugle claims that Judge Frank Hoskins erred in giving him consecutive time on top of the five-year maximum penalty for impaired driving.

The 52-year-old from Colchester County pleaded guilty last October to impaired driving, leaving the scene of an accident and driving while prohibited.

Naugle has 68 other criminal convictions going back to 1974, including 22 for impaired driving, failing the breathalyzer or refusing to provide a sample of his breath, and 14 for driving while disqualified.
