Winter storm warning in Timmins: up to 45 cm of snow possible, beginning tonight

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for areas in and around Timmins, Cochrane and Iroquois Falls.

“Major winter storm with heavy snow and blowing snow is expected,” said the warning, which was updated Tuesday morning.

“Total snowfall amounts of 25 to 45 cm with higher amounts possible. Significantly reduced visibility, to near zero at times, in heavy snow and blowing snow.”

Begins tonight, ends Thursday

Snow is expected to begin Tuesday evening and continue until Thursday or Thursday night.

“Strong northerly winds will accompany the snow, leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility to near zero at times,” Environment Canada said.

“The heaviest snow is expected on Wednesday. Total snowfall amounts may exceed 50 cm for some locales northeast of Lake Superior. Travel will likely be hazardous. Road closures are possible.”

Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel and outdoor activities for the next few days, as well as to “prepare for disruptions to transportation, services and utilities.”

Ontario Provincial Police also issued a travel warning ahead of the storm.

“Drivers are reminded to slow down and increase following distances, avoid sudden braking, and use headlights in low visibility,” the OPP said.

“Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle before driving and give yourself extra time to reach your destination. Before heading out, check road conditions at Ontario 511 and monitor local radio for updates. Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready with proper tires, functioning wipers, and an emergency kit.”

The police warning comes in the wake of the area’s first storm earlier this month, which included “commercial vehicle rollovers and near misses involving emergency vehicles,” police said.

“These incidents highlight the importance of adjusting driving habits during winter weather.”
