Timmins police reopens Mountjoy Street as investigation continues

Few details have been released, but police in Timmins responded Tuesday to reports of a gun in the Mountjoy Street area of the city.

Timmins police reopened Mountjoy Street after it was closed for several hours Tuesday morning due to a weapons investigation.

The closure started shortly before 7 a.m., and police would only say officers were responding to an “ongoing incident” between Algonquin Boulevard and Third Avenue.

“To ensure the safety of all community members and to allow officers to carry out their duties without obstruction, the public is asked to avoid this area and use alternate routes this morning,” police said.

“At this time, there are no known threats to public safety, and further information will be provided as it becomes available. We thank the public for their cooperation and understanding.”

Just before noon, police said in an update that the street was reopened to traffic and pedestrian access.

“We thank the public for their patience and cooperation while officers worked to safely manage the scene,” the update said.

“The incident remains under active investigation and further details will be shared as they become available.”

Timmins police spokesperson Michelle St. Louis confirmed to CTV News Northern Ontario in an email Tuesday afternoon that the investigation involves weapons, but didn’t say what type.
