Sudbury suspect charged with impaired near Elliot Lake

Police found an empty wine bottle and cans of beer at a crash last weekend involving an SUV south of Elliot Lake.

As a result, a 58-year-old suspect from Garson in Greater Sudbury was charged with impaired driving.

Ontario Provincial Police were called to the crash site around 8 p.m. Oct. 6, on Highway 108 about 10 kilometres south of Elliot Lake.

"A small northbound sport-utility vehicle (SUV) failed to negotiate a curve and collided with the guard rails, causing airbags to deploy," police said in a news release Monday.

"Police also spoke to the driver who exhibited obvious signs of impairment. Furthermore, an empty bottle of wine and cans of beer were located inside the SUV."

The driver was later charged with two impaired driving offences and the vehicle was towed and impounded.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Dec. 12.

"The OPP reminds motorists that no amount of alcohol or drug is acceptable to consume and drive," police said.
