Sudbury police warn about increase in landscaping, paving scams

With many people planning renovation projects this summer, police in Greater Sudbury are reminding residents to take steps to ensure they are dealing with reputable contractors.

“With warmer weather arriving in Sudbury, we’re seeing an increase in door-to-door and online offers for landscaping, paving and home improvement work,” police said June 9.

“While many contractors are legitimate, fraudulent operators may demand large upfront payments and fail to complete -- or even start -- the work.”

A common tactic for scammers is to offer a low price that’s available for a limited time -- and that requires payment or a large deposit before the work is completed.

Watch for red flags

Other warning signs, police said, are contractors that don’t provide a written contract or offer vague terms; don’t offer a business address, references, or proof of insurance; and who offer cash-only deals.

Residents should also insist on getting written quotes outlining costs and timelines and get references before agreeing to proceed.

“Avoid paying in full up front -- consider staged payments tied to progress,” police said.

“Verify the business by checking reviews, registration, and the Better Business Bureau for ratings and complaints.”

Police also warn that disputes about unfinished or poor-quality work can be considered civil matters under Ontario law, “which means recovery of funds may not be straightforward.”
