SAULT STE. MARIE — While retirement homes have closed their doors to the public during the pandemic, residents in Sault Ste. Marie were treated to a special Easter celebration.

A rally of vehicles passed through several nursing homes to show the seniors that they're not alone.

"We wanted to do something special during such a difficult time," said Scott MacDonald, the event organizer.

"We know how lonely they are feeling in there, so this just feels right to do."

MacDonald says he has several family members who are currently in retirement homes.

"We thought blaring classic tunes, honking our horns, that this would be the best way to bring them joy," said MacDonald.

The procession passed through the F.J. Davey, Mapleview and Great Northern retirement homes, before making its way to the Ontario Finnish Resthome.

There, they played music while the residents had dinner.

"We didn't know how these homes would react to this when we reached out initially," said MacDonald.

"But they were far more supportive than we ever would have thought, it was truly emotional."

While the group planned the first procession around the Easter weekend, MacDonald says he hopes to continue it throughout the pandemic.

"I think, if this one proves successful enough, we'd certainly love to continue doing this"
