Police say impaired driver pulled off Hwy. 17 to damage business, assault employee

A suspected impaired driver made a scene on Highway 17 this week before pulling off the road and damaging a business.

As a result, a 37-year-old from Sudbury is facing numerous charges.

The incident began Wednesday around 5 p.m. when Ontario Provincial Police received traffic complaint on the highway in Markstay-Warren.

“The driver of the same vehicle was then reported to be at a local business on Highway 17, where they began to damage the property by breaking windows and then assaulted an employee,” OPP said in a news release Thursday.

“Police attended the scene and arrested the driver. The victim received minor injuries.”

Police determined the driver was drunk, but they refused to provide a breath sample.

The Sudbury suspect is charged with mischief over $5,000, assault causing bodily harm and refusing to provide a breath sample.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on July 4.

The driver was issued a 90-day driver's licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
