Police on Manitoulin arrest 3 in school break-in, theft case

Three people have been charged in connection with recent break-ins in the Manitoulin Island community of Wiikwemkoong.

Three people have been arrested and stolen electronics recovered after the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) executed two search warrants in connection with recent break-ins at a local school.

The warrants, carried out on Wednesday were part of an investigation into a series of break and enters at Wiikwemkoong Junior School. The thefts, which occurred in recent weeks, involved several computers and disrupted school operations.

At a residence on Hills Trail, officers recovered stolen computers linked to the incidents. A 42-year-old woman was arrested for breaching her release conditions, along with a 31-year-old man wanted for failing to comply with his release terms.

A second search on Wakegijig Avenue led to the arrest of a 32-year-old man, who is charged with possession of property obtained by crime, break-and-enter with intent to commit an indictable offence, theft, mischief, resisting a peace officer and two counts of failure to comply with a probation order.

The accused were all held pending bail hearings.

“The success of this operation is a testament to our officers’ unwavering dedication to the safety and service of our community,” said Police Chief Ron Gignac.

“Every offender we remove from our streets contributes to a safer environment for our residents.”

Authorities said they will continue to collaborate with school officials and community partners to enhance security for students and staff.
