Northern Ont. suspect gets stuck in snow after trying to break into former partner’s residence

A disturbance call in Cochrane, Ont., this week ended with a suspect fleeing police and getting caught when they got stuck in waist-high snow.

The incident began when Ontario Provincial Police responded to a call around 11:45 p.m. March 3 about a disturbance at a residence on Highway 11.

“Police were advised that an individual had arrived at the home by vehicle and was attempting to break a window,” the OPP said in a news release Wednesday.

“Upon police arrival, the suspect fled on foot but became stuck in waist-high snow, allowing officers to take them into custody.”

Police determined they had been drinking before they arrived at the residence, but the suspect refused to comply with a breath demand. OPP also determined that the suspect was at the residence of their former partner.

The 24-year-old from Cochrane is charged with impaired driving, refusing a breath demand, uttering threats, and driving while suspended and prohibited.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on April 15 in Cochrane. The vehicle was impounded for seven days.

“Due to the intimate partner nature of the incident, the name of the accused will not be released to protect the victim’s identity,” police said.
