Northern Ont. man driving company truck charged with impaired

A northern Ontario man has been charged with impaired driving after being stopped in a company truck for a traffic violation in Elliot Lake early Friday morning, police say.

On April 19 at about 12:45 a.m., members of East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a general patrol on Mississauga Avenue when police observed a construction vehicle with a Highway Traffic Act infraction.

“A construction company grey pickup truck was stopped for a traffic infraction when police detected an odour of alcoholic beverage emanating from the driver's breath,” said police in a news release.

“A roadside test was completed.”

As a result of the incident, a 38-year-old Wahnapitae man is facing two impaired driving offences along with a charge for an improper number plate light.

Police also impounded the vehicle involved.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear in court on May 9.

None of the allegations has been proven in court.

Police advised that “no amount of alcohol or drug is acceptable to consume and drive.”

The OPP has also asked the public to report impaired drivers.

“Should you observe a suspected impaired driver, please dial 911 or contact the Ontario Provincial Police,” said police.
