North Bay student found off campus with pellet gun, no charges laid after lockdown

North Bay police say after receiving a tip about a student possibly headed to a local high school with a firearm, which prompted a lockdown Friday, officers found a student off campus with a pellet gun.

Police said when they notified West Ferris Secondary School just after 11: 30 a.m. Dec. 8, staff took immediate action by going into lockdown.

The suspect was found by patrol officers shortly after the information was received.

Near North District School Board said the lockdown was lifted after 17 minutes when police determined there was no threat.

"The North Bay Police Service’s criminal investigations section took over the investigation and a pellet gun was recovered," police said in a news release Monday.

However, no charges will be laid in connection to the incident.

"As a result of the investigation, it was determined there was no information to indicate that the pellet gun was at the school, on route to the school or used in a way that posed any danger to students, staff or the general public," Insp. Scott McFarlane is quoted as saying in the news release.

After the distressing event, the school offered crisis support to anyone negatively affected.
