Morning traffic stop leads to impaired driving charge in Kapuskasing

More people are driving impaired by edibles Police and the CAA are reporting that more people are choosing to get behind the wheel impaired by edibles.

A traffic stop Sept. 20 on Bouldier Street in Kapuskasing ended with impaired driving charges for a 43-year-old suspect.

Ontario Provincial Police stopped the vehicle at 10 a.m., police said in a news release Thursday.

"Upon speaking with the driver, police determined that they had been consuming an intoxicating substance," the release said.

"The driver was arrested and transported to the Kapuskasing detachment for further testing, which the driver refused to participate in."

Charges include driving while impaired by drugs, refusing to comply with a demand, meth possession, driving with cannabis readily available, driving without insurance, and failing to carry permit in the vehicle.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Nov. 4 in Kapuskasing.

The suspect's driver's licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven.

Police want to remind residents that refusing to "comply with a lawful demand to provide breath sample or submit to a drug recognition evaluation without a reasonable excuse is a criminal offence, carrying the same penalties as an impaired driving charge."
