Death of an infant in northern Ont. now a criminal investigation

Ontario Provincial Police said Friday that the death of an infant last October on Manitoulin Island is now being investigated by the crime unit.

The crime unit has taken over the investigation of the death of an infant last year on Manitoulin Island, Ontario Provincial Police said Friday.

The baby was pronounced dead Oct. 1, 2024, in Burpee Township. Paramedics responded just after 9 a.m. to reports of an “unresponsive infant at a residence,” police said in a news release.

“The infant was transported to a local hospital by paramedics and later pronounced deceased.”

Forensic testing

The crime unit took over the case following forensic testing. It’s working under the direction of the OPP criminal investigation branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Assistance is being provided by OPP Forensic Identification Services.

“As the investigation remains ongoing, no further details can be released at this time,” police said.
