Bears move on, Lake Laurentian trail reopens in Sudbury

Sudbury trail reopens after bears clear out After it closed because of bear activity, Conservation Sudbury has reopened the Lake Laurentian Loop Trail at Lake Laurentian.

After closing it because of recent bear activity, Conservation Sudbury has reopened the Lake Laurentian Loop Trail at Lake Laurentian.

“Conservation Sudbury staff, along with the MNRF bear team, visited the section of concern this morning and we suspect the bears have moved on,” the group said on social media.

“However, please continue to remain cautious when hiking.”

Likely attracted by this year’s bumper blueberry crop, bears were spotted along 10-kilometre loop, prompting Conservation Sudbury to shut it down this week for just the third time in 10 years.

“There have (been) sighting of multiple bears and for safety reasons, we will be temporarily closing this trail,” the group said.

Now that it is open, hikers are being urged to be “aware of your surroundings, refrain from wearing headphones that prevent you from hearing what’s happening, travel in groups of three or more whenever possible, wear a bear bell or have conversations with your companions, and keep dogs under control.”
