FREDERICTON - New Brunswick Tories are promising to remove the toll on the ferry to Grand Manan Island if they are elected next month.

Conservative Leader David Alward says it's the only ferry service of its kind in the province that charges a usage toll and it's unfair to island residents.

Alward says a Tory government would fully subsidize the operator, Coastal Transport Ltd., and retain the current operating schedule.

He says the move could make it more attractive for people to live, work and operate a business on Grand Manan and promote tourism.

The island's population has been steadily declining in recent years.

The election is Sept. 27.
