Rights on red causing hundred of accidents: study

Rights on red have caused hundreds of accidents since 2003, according to a Transport Quebec study.

Right turns on red lights have caused hundreds of accidents and five deaths in Quebec, results from a Transport Quebec released Wednesday study show.

The traffic law, which applies to all areas of Quebec other than the island of Montreal, was sanctioned in 2003. In the six years since, it has contributed to five deaths, 30 major injuries and 622 minor injuries, the study shows.

That's a total of 1 per cent of all accidents in the province.

The statistics fall in line with other provinces, which also permit drivers to turn right on red lights.

The injuries affect mostly pedestrians and cyclists, the study shows.
