No cyclists killed on Montreal roads in 2019 so far

Montreal — While 2019 has proven to be an especially deadly year for Montreal pedestrians, not a single cyclist was killed on the city’s roads, according to police.

A spokesperson for Montreal police said that, while three cyclists were killed in 2018, there were none as of Dec. 21, 2019. Similarly, two motorcyclists died on Montreal roads last year, but none were killed this year.

However, the number of pedestrian deaths were up by six from last year. With 24 fatalities, 2019 was the deadliest year for Montreal pedestrians in over a decade.

In total, there have been 24 pedestrian fatalities so far in 2019, with one vehicle passenger and three drivers also losing their lives.

Last year, 17 pedestrians lost they lives.

"We're seeing visits to the hospital. You can ask any cyclist about their colleague being hit. There's definitely still a high number of people seeing severe injuries," said Jason Savard, spokesperson for the association of pedestrians and cyclists of NDG.
