Fires injure two people in Longueuil, Montreal

Firefighters in Montreal and Longueuil were very busy overnight dealing with a breakout of blazes .

The first fire took place in Longueuil in the second story of an apartment building on Marmier St.

An 18-year-old woman went into cardiac arrest and was being worked on by paramedics as she was brought to hospital. Late Monday morning she remained in critical condition.

Firefighters suspect this fire, which began around 9:45 p.m. Sunday, started in a mattress located next to a heating element.

Ten other occupants of the six-plex had to evacuate their homes until the fire was brought under control.

The second fire of the night fared 60 people living in an apartment block to rush outside just before 3 p.m.

The fire generated a considerable amount of smoke, and two hours after it started firefighters were spotted smashing windows in the basement as they searched for hot spots.

Firefighters say the fire seems to have started on the ground floor before spreading to the upper floors of the apartment building on a small street called Place Boutet, near Langelier Blvd. and one block south of Sherbrooke St.

Damage is estimated at $200,000.

Nobody was injured.

Around 4 a.m. a third fire ignited, with flames ripping through a duplex in the northern part of the city.

One firefighter was hurt and taken to hospital to be treated for injuries to his knee

Damage at the building on 12th Ave. near Belair St. is extensive and it is doubtful that the families who lived in the building will be able to return home in the near future.

The cause of this fire, which was brought under control at 6:15 a.m., is not known.
