City a step closer to designating Meadowbrook Golf Club a greenspace

The City of Montreal may be one step closer to designating the Meadowbook Golf Club a greenspace.

Developers have long attempting to begin housing projects on the land, which straddles Cote Saint-Luc and Lachine.

In a meeting with his executive committee Wednesday, Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre approved a new revised development plan for the city, which will be made public Thursday.

Part of that plan would be to change the designation of the Lachine side of the land from residential to “greenspace/recreational.”

Last fall a committee studying the development plan voted unanimously to make Meadowbrook green.

“Everybody at the commission wanted that. There was a strong mobilization of civil society on that issue and I'm very optimistic. The plans I saw pass by lately indicate to me that it should be tagged as greenspace,” said Projet Montreal councillor Eric Alan Caldwell.

Once the city's executive committee announces its decision, it will go to Montreal city council and then the agglomeration council for approval.

Groupe Pacific, the company that bought the land for development, is suing the Montreal and the city of Cote Saint-Luc for $64 million.

Cote Saint-Luc rezoned their portion of the land to greenspace in 2000.
